Funeral service for Mr. William "Lagid" Russell Nelson, 54 of Killeen, TX will be held Tuesday, February 24, 2026, 12:00 p.m. at Chisolm's Family Funeral Home in Killeen, TX. Burial with military honors will follow the service at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, TX.
Viewing will be held two hours prior to the service (10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) at the funeral home.
William Russell Nelson, better known to most as Lagid, was a grandfather, father, stepfather, husband and brother, born in Neptune Township, New Jersey to Joyce Nelson Neals and L.C. Neals on March 15, 1971, and died in his home on February 1, 2026.
He was one of six children, he was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce Nelson Neals, and brother George Nelson. He had four brothers, George Nelson, Lionel Neals, Michael Nelson, and Stephan Nelson and one sister Pamela D. Brown.
Mr. Nelson graduated from Neptune High School, Neptune, New Jersey in 1989; and joined the Army right after graduation. During his time in the military, he was stationed at Fort Hood, Germany and served in in the Middle East during Desert Storm. After leaving the Army he attended Central Texas College for Criminal Justice. Later he worked for McLane's Southwest for 30 years in positions in the Warehouse and as a Truck Driver.
His military medals and awards include: Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Medal; Expert Badge Rifle; Expert Badge Grenade; and Southwest Asia Service Medal, W / 1 Bronze Star.
Mr. Nelson has one daughter: Jocelyn Marie Nelson, one stepdaughter, Tanira Simone Dockery, and one stepson, Gregory James Dockery. He has 3 step grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
