Funeral services for Mrs. Vera Belle Massey, 95 of Killeen, TX will be held Tuesday, August 8, 2023, 11:00 a.m. at Pershing Park Baptist Church in Killeen, TX. Burial will follow the service at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemtery in Killeen, TX.

Viewing will be held two hours prior to the service (9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.) at the church.

Mrs. Massey passed away July 30, 2023, in Copperas Cove, TX..

Sister Vera Belle Harris Massey was born on August 8, 1927, to parents Vernon McDade Harris and Nellie Tatum Harris in Belton, TX. The oldest of the couples 3 daughters, she was preceded in death by her younger sisters, Glayds Carruthers, and Zelina Jones, as well as her parents.

Sister Vera grew up in Belton and attended the local Harris High School, graduating in 1945. She continued her education at Prairie View A&M University from 1945 to 1947. After leaving University, Sister Vera gave birth to her only child, a daughter, Janice. She worked on Fort Cavazos, formerly named Fort Hood, as a Laundry Attendant. Later in life she met and married Henry C. Massey. The couple married in 1976 and in that same year, she joined Pershing Park Baptist Church. Sister Vera soon began her career in sales and continued in this type of work until 1996 when she retired from Dillard's Department store. Sister Vera was a Deaconess, Sunday School Teacher, Member of the Food and Fellowship Committee, and a money counter for the church.

Vera enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and friends. Feeding people who came to her house and simply being around people were some of her favorite pastimes. She was never more than a phone call away and was the glue to her family. Vera was the oldest female member of Pershing Park and will be remembered for her pleasant smile and the way she cared for everyone.

Left behind to cherish her memory is her daughter, Janice Branch of Killeen; grandsons, Timothy Swane and Gregory Swane of Killeen; great-grandchildren, Deangelo Morrison of Killeen, Tiffany Webb (Keith Webb) of Killeen, Gregory Swane Jr. of Chicago Illinois, Jori Swane of Killeen, and Darren Thomas of Killeen. She also leaves a host of great-great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and friends. Vera also leaves a special friend, Sister Eva Spikes.
