A memorial service in honor of the life of Roger Harold Whitfield will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, August 8th, 2025, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church located at 4700 East Rancier Avenue in Killeen, Texas. Roger passed away into the Kingdom of Heaven on Thursday, July 31st, 2025, while in hospice care in Temple, Texas, with his son praying for his solace near his side. He was 73.

Born on Tuesday, May 20th, 1952, in Sedalia, MO, to Harold and Betty (Geiser) Whitfield. Roger was the eldest son, with an older sister and two younger brothers he loved dearly. Roger's father worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad and, like most railroad families, moved often with the railroad. Roger went to school in Osawatomie, KS, Kansas City, MO, Wichita, KS, Coffeyville, KS, and finally settled in Claremore, OK in 1966. Roger was the oldest brother and took on the job of protector of his big sister and little brothers at a young age, even following his sister on dates. Even though Jane's date had met their father, potential dates still had to go up against the brother squad led by Roger. Jane always knew, growing up, they had her back, and Roger knew she had his. He had a gentle soul and loved family from an early age. When Roger was 12 years old, he was baptized at Trinity Baptist Church in Claremore, OK by their pastor, Brother Kenneth Smith. He grew up with a love of fast cars being the son of Harold and his grandfather Linden. One of the only regrets he ever spoke of was selling his 1969 Corvette Stingray and his 1969 Indy Pace Car. He told his son, "I wish I had those two cars back." He played high school football for the Claremore Zebras as a full back, and the team won the conference championship his senior year in 1969.

Roger graduated high school in Claremore, OK with the class of 1970. He continued his education at the Oklahoma Military Academy in Claremore, OK before his marriage of 32 years to his children's mother, Brenda Long in 1972. Roger started his career on the railroad in 1971 in Claremore, OK with the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and continued the tradition as a 4th generation railroad employee. His career on the railroad would span 6 decades, including the MoPac merger with the Union Pacific Railroad in 1982. During his time on the railroad, he held several job titles and worked on tie and crossing gangs, held supervisor positions as a foreman, and ultimately made Roadmaster in Atchison, KS, prior to the merger before returning to Oklahoma in 1986. Over his entire career, he lived in well over 35 different residences, moving a lot like most railroaders do. He would put down roots again in the Claremore area until he started the final position with Union Pacific that he loved the most as a long-haul truck driver in the late 1990s. Hauling heavy equipment for the railroad all across the western United States stationed out of Denver, CO and Dallas, TX. He continued in that roll for the remainder of his career until his retirement in June of 2020 with almost 50 years of service. The Whitfield family was recognized prior to his retirement in a railroad magazine with having over 500 years of total service spanning four generations in the industry.

In his free time, Roger was dedicated to serving at his churches over the years. While living in Claremore, OK, he would attend both Kids Camp and Falls Creek as one of the cooks keeping the youngsters well fed with home cooked meals. He was known for being a hard worker and a dedicated family man. He was kind and had a gentle presence about him in spite of the hard calloused hands that had spent decades working on the railroad.

After his daughter graduated high school, he would meet and later marry his current wife, Nancy, in November 2004. Roger and Nancy were dedicated to each other, always doing for one another in those small, special ways that make a marriage so lasting and precious. Roger's dedication to his wife and entire family was on full display throughout his life, but especially when he cared for his immediate family, family was his #1 priority. From cooking morning breakfast, the feasts around Thanksgiving that he would prepare, and the deep insightful guidance he would pass along during conversation all proved true with his actions from a lifetime of experience and service. Roger had a special way of impacting the lives of everyone he met. Roger loved the time he spent driving for Uber on his days off from the railroad in the later years and even continued to drive for them during retirement. Roger would say he felt like it was his way to be of service to the soldiers and community around Fort Hood as an expression of his patriotism and love for America's military personnel.

Roger was a strong man of faith, he left his family and friends with many charished memories, he would hope to leave you now with the knowledge that his greatest desire is for you to come to know Jesus Christ, have a close personal relationship with him and accept him as your Lord and savior so he can fellowship with you someday in Heaven. Those who survive his legacy include his wife of almost 21 years, Nancy Whitfield of Harker Heights; his children, son, Jeffrey Whitfield of Owasso, OK; daughter, Whitney Webb of Cleburne; stepsons Kris Voegele of Grand Prairie and Michael Voegele of Harker Heights; his sister, Jane Edwards of Houston, MO; his brother, George Whitfield of College Station; sisters-in-law, Janet Flemmer of Glendale, AZ; Bonnie Kiesz of Pierre, SD; Margie Neal and husband Clint of Colorado Springs, CO; his precious grandchildren, Eliza and Maximus Webb, nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends. Roger was preceded in death by his father, Harold Whitfield, his mother, Betty Whitfield, his brother, Arthur Whitfield, his brother-in-law, Mike Edwards, and sister-in-law, Karin Whitfield.
