Funeral service for Retired SGT Ronnie Lee Hughes, 64 of Killeen, TX will be held Tuesday, May 11, 2021, 12:00 p.m. at Chisolm's Family Funeral Home in Killeen, TX. Burial with military honors will follow the service at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, TX.
Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service (11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) at the funeral home.
Mr. Hughes passed away May 3, 2021 in Killeen, TX.
Ronnie Lee Hughes was born to Ralph and Eleanor Cooper on January 31, 1957 in Orlando Florida. He was raised in Rochester, New York. In 1976 he joined the National Guard and later went Active Duty until he was medically discharge. While serving his country he received several awards to include: The Army Service Ribbon, Army Achievement Medal-2, Army Commendation Medal-2, Army Good Conduct Medal-3, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, and the Expert Qualification Badge M-16 Rifle. Ronnie was also a U.S. Army Active-Duty Boxer.
Ronnie was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in Waco, TX.
He was a Fort Hood World Beater Boxer from 1981- 1987, and a coach of Camp Humphry Boxing Team, from 1987- 1988. His coaches were Coach MSG Ken Adams at Fort Hood, TX and Coach Alton Merkerson at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Ronnie was the Owner/Trainer of Poor Man Boxing Gym in Killeen, TX. He was the G.O.A.T mitt trainer. His favorite sayings were: "Iron sharpens iron", "If I knew you were coming, I would have baked you a cake", "Even a dog would bark at me", and "One! Gone!"
Ronnie lived in the Central Texas area since 1980. He was a former member of Anderson AME Church in Killeen, Texas.
Ronnie married Ronda Lee Coleman January 5, 1980 in Kent, New York. They shared many wonderful memories.
Left to cherish his memories are: his wife, Ronda Lee Hughes of Killeen, TX; children, Nahshon Hughes of Killeen, TX, and Anne Hughes of Rochester, NY; grandchildren, Davena Morris of Charlotte, NY and Diamond Hughes of Killeen, TX; father, Ralph Cooper of Rochester, NY; sisters, Elaine Johnson (Gary) of Detroit, MI. and Jacqueline Cooper of Rochester, NY; brothers Victor Hughes of Killeen, TX, Alton Bernard Cooper (Willa) of Jacksonville, FL, and Ralph Cooper, Jr.; sister-in-law, Shirley Hill of Prattville, AL; brother-in-laws, Daniel Rose (Shirley) of Brockport, NY and Earl Townsend (Sandra) of Lockport, NY; special aunt, Joan Hughes of Killeen, TX and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles, aunts, other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his mother Eleanor Hughes and grandparents Justice and Eloise Hughes.
