Funeral service for Retired SFC Richard James, 67 of Killeen, TX will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2025, 11:00 a.m. at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center in the Special Events Room. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow the service at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, TX.

Our beloved Richard "Doll" James—devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend—passed away on August 10, 2025, at the age of 67, due to an unfortunate accident while doing what he loved most—fishing. The joy of the catch had always been among his greatest pleasures, and it was there that his time with us came to a close.

Born on October 11, 1957, in Glendora, Mississippi, to the late Jessie James and Sarah James, Richard lived a life filled with happiness, joy, and purpose—a hardworking and responsible man whose days were fruitful and full.

Richard proudly served his country in the United States Army for 22 years, demonstrating honor, courage, and unwavering commitment. After retiring from the military, he continued his life of service as a State Trooper for the State of Texas. Known for his skill, sharp instincts, and fearless dedication, he earned the nickname "State" and the reputation of being one of the baddest State Troopers in the land.

Richard was a man of many loves and talents. He found joy in fishing, dancing, and telling stories that could light up any room. Richard was always the life of the party and never met a stranger—every person he encountered felt as though they had known him for years.

Family was everything to Richard. Every year, he traveled from state to state to see his loved ones—whether in Mississippi, Cleveland, California, St. Louis, or Kentucky. One thing was certain: Doll was coming, and everyone looked forward to his visit, cherishing every moment they shared together. Likewise, his family enjoyed visiting him. Those visits were unforgettable, always filled with laughter, love, and the warmth of Mona's incredible cooking and hospitality.

Richard's marriage to Monica "Mona" James was one of unwavering love, respect, and partnership. Mona was his rock, his confidante, and his greatest supporter. Together, they created a home where family and friends were always welcome.

A Loving Family

He leaves to cherish his memory five children: Minnie Ann Pettigrew, Anthony James Hill, Gwendolyn Wright, Antroine Brown, and Kevon Richard James, and stepchildren Christy Thomas, Kizzy Readus, La'kesha Washington, and Alonzo Washington Jr.—each holding a special place in his heart.

He adored being a grandfather; his grandchildren increased his joy and widened his smile, adding new purpose to his life. He leaves to mourn seventeen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Richard was preceded in death by his father Jessie James, mother Sarah James, sisters Irene Johnson, Roberta Warren, Gladys James, Willean James, Ollie Mae Prasai, and brothers Ben James, Jimmy James, Eddie James, and Tommy Lee James.

He is survived by his sisters Betty Pendleton and Jessica James Tate, both of Cleveland, Ohio; his brothers Mack Arthur James of Cleveland, Ohio, and Isaac Ledbetter of Glendora, Mississippi; along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews—each of whom he touched with his unique kindness and personal attention, and he was everybody's favorite person.

Richard was blessed with a loving extended family, including his mother-in-law, Jeanete Cozart, and his brothers- and sisters-in-law. They were more than in-laws—they were true family, and their bond was filled with joy and love.

Friends Like Family

He also leaves behind dear friends who were like family to him, including, but not limited to, Pat L. Williams, L.C. Bolden, Clarence Pew, William Moore, Lynwood Lewis, and Dr. William "Nate" Johnson, along with his football crew proudly called "The Chosen Few." It's impossible to name them all, but each of his friends held a special place in his heart.

A Legacy Remembered

Affectionately nicknamed "Doll" for his big, bright baby-doll eyes, Richard was also known as "Unc" and "State," titles that reflected his role in the family and his long-standing career.

He will be remembered for his unwavering service to his country and family, his gregarious spirit, his larger-than-life personality, and his gift for making everyone feel special. With his warmth, humor, and boundless energy, he touched countless lives and left an unforgettable mark on everyone he met.

Richard's story was one of service, love, and joy—a story that will be told for generations to come.
