Funeral Services for Retired 1SG Jerome Sherman Sr., 63, of Killeen, Texas will be held Tuesday, July 13, 2021, 1:00 p.m. at Greater Vision Community Church in Killeen, Texas. Burial with full military honors will follow the service at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas.

Visitation will be held on Monday, July 12, 2021, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Killeen, Texas.

A very special moment occurred on Tuesday, April 1, 1958, as Governor Sherman, Jr. and Rebecca Moody Sherman were blessed by the arrival of their son. Upon meeting their new bundle of joy, they named him Jerome, a name that means "holy." Jerome Sherman was raised in Lawnside, New Jersey, but was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where his love for the Philadelphia Eagles originated. Jerome accepted the Lord and Savior at an early age. He was baptized, while attending Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Magnolia, New Jersey. During his faithful membership he served in the youth choir, as a junior missionary, and a junior usher.

Jerome received his early education in the New Jersey Public School System. He graduated from Camden County Vocational High School in 1976. Jerome, small in stature, but big in heart, found a passion for sports and joined his school's wrestling team. While in high school, he studied heating and air conditioning.

In a quick moment, he was faced with a decision that would change his life forever. Presented with an opportunity he could not refuse; he was sworn into the U.S. Army in 1976. Serving over 23 years in the US Army as an Air Defense Artillery soldier and a Senior Sergeant, deploying to different locations all over the world, fighting in a few wars and receiving many awards. He served in the Desert Storm, Desert Shield, and Kuwait Wars. His awards included, but were not limited to the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars (BSS), Kuwait Liberation Medal, Sharpshooter Marksmanship Qualification Badge with Rifle Bar, and Sharpshooter Marksmanship Badge with Pistol Bar.

In July 1993, while still on active duty, Jerome, Sr. met the love of his life, Inger Breaux. Realizing that he could not live with out his soulmate, Jerome proposed marriage. The two were united in holy matrimony on November 23, 1994. To this union, Jerome brought three children (Jerome, Jr., Catrice and Khari), and Inger brought two sons (Eric and Detroit).  This blended family was made complete upon the birth of their daughter, Ebony in 1996.

After his service to the United States he was honorably discharged, retiring in 1991 with the rank of Master Sergeant (E-8). Jerome in all his stubbornness refused to sit still after his retirement. He continued to add to his already established and impressive resume by working contracted employment through the Test and Experimentation Service Company (TESCO) and Consolidated Analysis Centers International Incorporation (CACI) both located in Fort Hood, TX. He found himself still being a role model and leader which were always two of his strongest character traits.

It wasn't all work and no play though. Jerome in his spare time found himself interested in race cars. He even bought himself a Corvette! In his spare time, he would find joy in restoring and rebuilding old school race cars that later led him to joining the Buffalo Soldiers Racing Team in the early 2000's. Affectionately know as "Old School" to the BSR team he served as the Vice President, Treasurer/Secretary, and handling all f the embroidery needs. Jerome leaves some of his work in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio at the Extreme Raceway Park, Ennis Motorsports Park, Houston Motorsports Park and Alamo Raceway Park.

On the unforgettable day of July 1, 2021, Jerome "Sherm" Sherman, Sr's life and journey ended, but his memory remains. Jerome was preceded in death by his father, Governor Sherman, Jr., his brother, Governor Sherman, III, and his nephew, Amire Jennings.

Those left to cherish his memories: his biological mother Rebecca M. Sherman; his bonus mother: Mary S. Sherman; his loving and devoted wife of 26 years: Inger Breaux-Sherman; five sons: Jerome Sherman, Jr. (Stephanie), Eric D. Breaux, Devon P. Hunt, Detroit Evans; and Khari J. Walker; two daughters: Catrice L. Sherman, and Ebony N. Sherman; sixteen grandchildren: O'Nyah, Cameron E., Zuri, Zemora, Jeremiah, Celia, Amarius, Jade, Erica, Aaliyah, Cameron, Noadiah, Elijah, Azariah, Novah, and Alexis; one sister: Carole D. Sherman; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, neighbors, and former co-workers.
