Mr. James Matthews Washington was born on January 21, 1932, to the late Hardy and Pearl Washington in Bowman, South Carolina. Shortly after his birth, the Washington family moved and lived in Orangeburg, South Carolina, becoming one of the few black families that owned the land they cropped. He went home to be with the lord on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 24/7 Legacy Care in Harker Heights, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as siblings: the Late Lucinda Pressley, the Late Lucille Mack, the Late Hattie Oliver, the Late Julia Hathaway, and the Late Hosea "Bubba" Washington.
Mr. Washington was a loyal and talented soldier that proudly served his country for over 30 years, reaching the rank of Command Sargeant Major. He fought during the Vietnam War and received the Vietnam Service Medal (w/bronze stars), Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal (w/3 silver loops), Infantry Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and other prestigious awards while in the Army. He was also a life-long member of the VFW Post 9191. After retiring honorably from the Army, he opened J&E (James & Eloise) Real Estate in Killeen, Texas and sold homes.
Mr. Washington enjoyed sports, telling funny stories and spending time with his family, introducing his children and grandchildren to various sports and life lessons throughout his entire time on earth. He was truly a "family man" that took pride in providing and caring for his family, especially his loving wife Eloise. Holidays, birthdays, and special family occasions were his favorite times of the year, knowing that family would come together to celebrate!
He leaves to cherish fond memories with his loving wife of 64 years, Eloise Houston Washington of Nolanville, Texas; his son, Anthony Earl Washington of Temple, Texas; his daughter, Jennifer Elaine Washington of Nolanville, Texas; his son Billy Michael Washington of Sierra Vista, Arizona, and his daughter, Finni Machelle (Johnson) Washington of Killeen, Texas. In addition, he was blessed with eight beautiful grandchildren and many great grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces and nephews. His legacy is deeply rooted and will continue for many years to come.
Rest in Heaven James Matthews Washington, loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend.
