Funeral service for Retired Sergeant Frank Edward Gansel, 69 of Killeen, TX will be held Wednesday, April 19, 2023, 11:00 a.m. at Chisolm's Family Funeral Home in Killeen, TX. Burial with full military honors will follow the service at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, TX.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 18, 2023 (6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.) at the funeral home.

Retired Army Sergeant Frank Edward Gansel of Killeen, Texas passed April 5, 2023. He was born November 30, 1953, to parents Helen Lillian Olsen and Frank Samuel Gansel in Brooklyn, NY. Frank graduated from Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn, New York in 1971.

He enlisted in the United States Army in 1979 in Brooklyn, New York. While serving he met his wife, Mary Ann, and they married on April 24, 1984. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1994 while stationed at Fort Hood, Texas from the 1st Calvary Division 13th Signal Battalion. His awards, medals, and accomplishments include: Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal (4th Award), National Defense Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (with two clusters), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (with two clusters), Expert Badge Rifle, and Expert Badge Grenade, Leadership Development Course and NCO Basic Course. His primary occupational specialty was Automated Communications Computer Systems Repairer. He loved the U.S. Army and in addition to many stateside assignments he also served his country overseas in Germany, Egypt, and Korea. After his military career he went on to work for McLane Distribution Company in Temple, Texas where he also retired from after a 20-year career in 2014.

Frank was a great father and loved his family dearly. He enjoyed anything to do with Army tanks, history, science, crossword puzzles, and guns from all around the world. He also loved playing darts and watching his favorite team, The Minnesota Vikings, play at his favorite bar, O'Malley's. Some of his favorite TV shows included Dr. Who and The Big Bang Theory as well as MythBusters and Battle Bots. He loved Nova and PBS and listening to Star Date on the radio every day. His favorite genre of music was Classical music but was also a huge fan of Jerry Garcia. He was very intellectual and loved writing poetry. Some of the many things he read, that weren't gun encyclopedias, was the book 1984 by George Orwell and the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare. He was always happy to make his three favorite dishes for everyone, meatloaf, corned beef, and fried chicken breast. You could also find him in the kitchen making his favorite sandwich, hard salami with extra sharp cheddar cheese on Jewish rye bread.

Left to cherish his memories are his daughter Melissa Guzman; sons, Charles & Thomas Gansel; mother, Helen Amundsen; son-in-law, Joseph Guzman; Grandchildren, Jayden, Leo, & Alexander Guzman; half-brothers, Gregory Gansel, Karl, Erik, David, & Alfred Amundsen; half-sister, Kristine Christensen; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of nearly 29 years until her untimely passing in 2013, Mary Ann Gansel; father Frank Samuel Gansel; brother Frank Edward Gansel; stepmother Roseann Gansel; and stepfather Karl Amundsen.
