Funeral service for Mr. Collis Gates, Jr., 85 of Killeen, TX will be held Friday, April 30, 2021, 11:00 a.m. at Church of Christ- Southside in Killeen, TX. Burial with military honors will follow the service at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, TX.
Collis Gates, Jr. of Killeen, Texas was born June 12, 1935 the middle son of Collis Gates, Sr. and Hannah Baisy Gates in Lee County Texas. As a young boy he worked hard in the field alongside his siblings and excelled in school where he was Captain of the basketball team and graduated Valedictorian of his class. His family often boasted about his strong work ethic and physical ability.
Shortly after graduating, he was called to serve his country, which he did honorably for 27 years. His United States Army service required that he serve tours in Vietnam. He was decorated with many medals and accolades for his leadership skills during both war and peacetime.
In December of 1967, he was united in holy matrimony to Irma Jean Rogers and continued to love her for 53 years until his death. Their union resulted in them being blessed with two children.
After serving his country, Collis (Junior to many of his family), embarked on a second career as a Real Estate Agent where he continued to work for Whisenhunt ERA and Coldwell Banker for the next twenty years. During this phase of his life, he made many lifelong friends and he cherished his time in the business.
Collis was also a dedicated member of Southside Church of Christ. He enjoyed fellowshipping with his church members, playing games, as well as teaching and continuing to learn.
Collis quietly departed this life on April 14, 2021. For those that new him, Collis had a hearty laugh, a warm heart, sound advice and a way of drawing people to him with little effort. In his healthier days, he enjoyed going fishing, eating at a select few restaurants, being around his family and watching sports of all kinds.
Collis was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and his four sisters. He is survived by his beloved wife Irma Gates; son Collis "Chip" (Rochelle) Gates III of Killeen, Texas and daughter, Valerie (Germane) Coleman of Frisco, Texas; grandson Riley Coleman, granddaughters Deja Martin, Anniah Adams, Deasia Martin, & Sydney Coleman; great-grandson Jamez Scott a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
