Funeral service for Retired SFC Charles Woodley Jarmon, 82 of Killeen, TX will be held Friday, October 27, 2023, 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Killeen, TX. Burial with full military honors will follow the service at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, TX.
Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service (12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.) at the church.

Charles W. Jarmon was born to Ella and Franklin Jarmon on November 26, 1940, in Berlin, MD. He was educated in the public schools of Worcester County, MD and graduated from Worcester High School in Newark, MD in 1959.

Upon graduation, Charles entered the United States Army where he dutifully served his country for 20 years, including two 13-month tours of duty in Korea and Vietnam, plus a tour of duty with his family in Bremerhaven, Germany. The remainder of his military service was spent in Fort Hood, TX, until his retirement as Sergeant First Class in 1980.

Charles arrived in Fort Hood on assignment orders in July 1964, where he met and fell in love with his beautiful and loving wife, Verda, in September of 1965. They were united in holy matrimony on June 18, 1966, in Fort Hood. While serving in Germany, the Lord blessed them with a beautiful daughter, Cynthia Denise. The family returned to the Marlboro Heights area in Killeen and were very active in church and community.

Charles dedicated his life to Christ at an early age, serving in the United Methodist Church in Berlin, MD. He was an active member of Anderson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Killeen for over four decades, where he served tirelessly as a steward, trustee, youth usher sponsor and Sunday School teacher. For the last several years, he was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church in Killeen.

Charles had three loves – his Heavenly Father, family/community, and his farm. His strong faith was evident and unmistakable and his wisdom and love for God (whom he referred to as 'his Daddy') was shared with all whom he encountered. He was a good husband, father, and friend who may have seemed rather gruff and stern on the outside, but he truly did have a heart of gold, selflessly dedicating his time and energy to providing for and feeding the hungry until the last few months of his life. His compassionate spirit and willingness to lend a helping hand touched the lives of many in the Killeen/Central TX community.

He was known as a great listener who gave sage advice and often encouraged and mentored others to do and be better.

One of his great passions was being out on his land raising his animals for over fifty years (cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, and dogs). He found the quiet, serenity and peace that he desired on his farm.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Franklin and Ella Jarmon; siblings: Edith Mulkey, William Jarmon, John Jarmon, and Elaine Jarmon; and son-in-law, Dr. Henry E. West. He leaves to rejoice in his homegoing: his loving wife, Verda M. Jarmon; daughter, Cynthia Jarmon West (Jackson, TN); grandson, Zachary N. West (Knoxville, TN); siblings, Ida Williams (James) Ellendale, DE; Catherine Whaley (William) Berlin, MD; Peggy Showell, Chester, PA; Barbara Doughty, Pleasantville, NJ; Lee Jarmon, Newcastle, DE; Anna Wright, Newark, DE; Joyce Jones (Isaac) Chester, PA; brother and sister-in-law, Cecil and Mary Robinson (Dallas, TX) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
