Before God formed Phyliss Ann Lea in her mother's womb, he knew her; before she was born on March 26, 1961, God blessed her. He ordained Walter and Mattie Ray Wilkinson Lea as her parents. Phyliss was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and reared in Kenner, Louisiana. She also spent several years of her adult life living in Gramercy, Louisiana and later making Killeen, Texas her home in 2018.
Phyliss' early childhood education was obtained from the Jefferson Parish School System and she later became an alumna of Walter L Cohen Senior High School located in New Orleans, Louisiana. Also, she maintained a technical degree from Lawton School. Phyliss was a hard, dedicated worker who always maintained employment in the service, maintenance, and plant industries. Her previous employment was at Turner Industries as a safety tech contractor.
Phyliss treasured every moment throughout her lifetime spent with her children and family. God allowed her to be clothed with love, tenderness and kindness from her daughter, Charmaine; when she was lonely and hurting, she took her in; when she was weak and hungry, she fed her; when she was sick, she took care of her; when she was thirsty, she gave her cool water to drink. (Matthew 25:35-36)
Phyliss departed earthly life for her eternal home on Wednesday, June 16, 2021. She was willing to be absent from the body and present with the Lord.
Phyliss was a loving mother to two children Jermaine Lea of New Orleans, La and Charmaine Sonnier of Killeen, TX. She is affectionately known as "Dutchess" to six grandchildren: Jermani (18), Jermod (13), Jermaine, Jr. (10), Jersey (3) and Juri Mattie Lea (2); Semaj "Hammer" Holland (16). Phyliss is survived by eight siblings: Margie Robinson of Locust Grove, GA; Linda Davis (Moses) of Liberty, MS; Patricia Hall (Robert) of Kenner, LA; Belinda Jones (Robert) of Waggaman, LA; Melvin Lea of Slidell, LA; Sylvester Lea of Baton Rouge, LA; Beverly Dominique (Rodney) and Causetta Joseph (Sidney), both of New Orleans, LA. And two Aunts: Vera Sharper and Betty Gene Lea. Also mourning the loss of Phyliss are a host of beloved nephews, nieces, extended family members and devoted friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents the late Walter and Mattie Lea; three sisters: Joyce Stewart, Bertha Wilson, and Flora Wright.
