Funeral service for Mrs. Mary Ruth Hollmon, 84 of Killeen, TX will be held Friday, August 5, 2022, 11:00 a.m. at Greater Peace Missionary Baptist Church in Killeen, TX. Burial will follow the service at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, TX.

Visitation will be held Thursday, August 4, 2022 (6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.) at Chisolm's Family Funeral Home in Killeen, TX.

Mary Ruth (Gibbs) Hollmon, 84, of Killeen, Texas, passed away on July 14, 2022, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer, surrounded by her family.

Mary Ruth was born on February 27, 1938, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Clarence and Clara (Oden) Gibbs in Ashville, Alabama. After graduating from Norris High School in 1956, Mary went on to pursue a degree in elementary education, with a minor in physical education, graduating from Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama.

An educator for some 40 years, Mary started teaching in 1963 with fifth and sixth graders in Jacksonville, Alabama. In 1969, she moved to the Killeen Independent School District to teach first the sixth grade and then the third. Except for a period from 1978 to 1981 when she taught in Nuremberg, Germany, she spent the rest of her career in Harker Heights, Texas, teaching second grade. An outstanding teacher herself, she entered into the profession because of her former teachers. A member of Alpha Delta Kappa (International Sorority for Outstanding Female Educators), she simply wanted to "reach and touch students' lives in a way that they would always remember."

Mary was a wife of 43 years to the late SFC Alexander Hollmon, Sr. One child was the result of this union. Alexander also had three children from a former marriage, Valerie Waller, Alexander Hollmon, Jr., and Denise Hollmon. Mary was previously married to Howard C. Jones, Jr., and three children were the result of this union. Mary was a kind and caring mother of Donna Renee Baggett, Adrianne Lytrisher Jones, Priscilla Cassandra Fisher, and Jessica Alexandria Gonzalez.

Being a mother was one of the most important parts of Mary's life, a role that gave her much pride and joy and set the foundation for her amazing career as a teacher. She was an excellent mom, supportive, kind, hilarious, and witty, and we will all miss her dearly. She was a strong and elegant woman who faced every challenge in life with courage and dignity. Our mother was a source of inspiration to us. She will be deeply missed by everyone whose life she touched. Mary was a strong woman of faith, a woman of praise, and a woman empowered by God. She instilled in us the importance of hard work and most importantly doing what is right. Our mother was a true role model. She was a faithful and dedicated member of the Greater Peace Missionary Baptist Church in Killeen, Texas. At Greater Peace, she extended her teaching skills of creativity and innovation, presenting wonderful arts and crafts and producing church events with just the perfect flair.

She leaves to cherish her memory: daughters, Donna Baggett, Adrianne Jones (Genelle Watts), Priscilla Fisher (Napoleon), Jessica Gonzalez, Valerie Waller (Charles), and Denise Hollmon; Alexander N. Hollmon, Jr. (son); grandchildren, Rashaan Jafar Miller, Arion Bashir (Miller), Brandon Hollmon, Alexander N. Hollmon III, Arian Joseph, Kaila Marie, Alexandria Mays, Ariss Barnett (D'Andre), Claira Jones, Gabriella Gonzalez, and Jeremiah Lane; great-grandchildren, Liyanna Barnett, Ava Barnett, Elijah Hollmon, Dexter Alexander Hollmon, and DeAnthony Jenkins; adopted family members, Keith Brown, Kimberly Gilliam (John Davis), LaMarriol Smith (Karen McLaughlin), Tammy Cheek, Mitlitha Whitsell, Reverend Cleotha Bates, Pamela Blakley, Candace Billups, Crystal Houston, Sheila Robertson, Dr. Pat Lannutti, and Sherry Simmons-Williams; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends.

In loving memory of this family's matriarch, she is the final member of her generation that set our family history in motion. Patiently awaiting her arrival in heaven are her parents, Clara and Clarence Gibbs; husband, SFC Alexander N. Hollmon, Sr.; sisters, Ethel Mae McKinney and Pearlie Mae Green; and brothers, James Gibbs, Claude Gibbs, and Jesse Gibbs.
