Funeral service for Mrs. Kay Elizabeth Brown, 78 of Killeen, TX will be held Saturday, September 30, 2023, 11:00 a.m. at Greater Peace Missionary Baptist Church in Killeen, TX.

Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service (9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.) at the church.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Ivy Beyond the Wall Service  will be held 10:00 a.m. at the church.

Kay Elizabeth Wiggins Brown was born December 10, 1944, to Helen Teen Richardson Wiggins and Josiah Wiggins. She passed away September 14, 2023, in Killeen, TX. The oldest of 8 children, she grew up in a loving home in Bay City, Texas. She accepted Christ at an early age and the family attended Tyree Chapel AME Church. Kay graduated from Hilliard High School in 1962 and further matriculated to Texas Southern University, where she majored in Journalism, graduating in 1967 and obtained her teaching certification in 1971.  An avid writer, she loved English and storytelling and ultimately through her 35-year teaching career focused on those areas.  She taught English in Killeen ISD (including at the highest – AP readiness level). Kay stressed the importance of academic excellence overall and served as sponsor for the National Honor Society. Utilizing her passion for storytelling and journalism, she also served as the school newspaper sponsor and was a reference for many students who later matriculated to college themselves. Some of her students have become educators and authors, utilizing the tools and influence that she provided during their formative years.

Kay met the love of her life, Clarence Billy Brown, Jr., at the wedding of their respective childhood friends where she was the Maid of Honor, and he was the Best Man. The two became united in marriage on November 25, 1967.  To this union, one child was born – Clarence Billy Brown, III. Kay and Clarence settled in Killeen, where they both tirelessly served the students and children of Killeen ISD until 2003, when their first grandchild was born.

Kay was a faithful and longtime member of Greater Peace Missionary Baptist Church in Killeen, Texas. She particularly enjoyed her service with the Choir. She loved the annual Easter Cantata and was committed to preparing for it and worshipping on Easter Sunday with the Choir and her Greater Peace Family. Also at Greater Peace, Kay served on the Mission Committee, the Hospitality Committee and Chaired the Pastor's Anniversary. Additionally, in continuing to bring the community together, Kay chaired a luncheon for retirees from various churches in Killeen.

Kay also served in her community including her service on the Board of the Greater Central Texas Federal Credit Union and uninterrupted service as an active member in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Mu Theta Omega Chapter from 1979 until her passing.

In 2003, and beyond, Kay would proudly declare that she retired in order to have time with her grandchildren. Kay relished the opportunity to spend time with her son and his family and took advantage of her new title as "Nana," attending every game, performance, birthday parties and Grandparents' Day with great pride. Family was very important to Kay. As Kay's memory became impaired, she continuously recounted stories of her family and childhood growing up with her beloved parents and siblings. Kay also was able to spend time with her grandchildren and was fond of that time.

Both of Kay's parents and one of her brothers (Curtis Wiggins) preceded her in death. Her son, Clarence, also preceded her in death. Without a doubt, the reunion of Kay and her beloved family members was a glorious one. She is survived by her husband Clarence of Killeen, TX; daughter-in-love Andrea MeShonn Evans Brown; grandchildren Evan Clarence, Ryan Ella Marie and Lily Elizabeth all of Dallas, Texas. She is further survived by her siblings Josiah Wiggins, Paul Wiggins (Theresa), Audrell Wiggins (Linda), Kathy Wiggins, Kenneth Wiggins all of Missouri City, Texas and Renee Williams (Bay City, Texas). She also leaves to mourn her loss a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other family and friends.
