Mr. Smith passed away June 26, 2022, in Killeen, TX. He was born January 13, 1946, in Florence, MS.
Mr. James Smith was born on January 13, 1946, to his parents Dora Lee Smith and James Smith in Florence, MS. He attended school in Jackson, MS. and upon completion of school, he was employed in the Furniture Industry. James was baptized at an early age and was a devoted member of the True Light Baptist Church in Jackson, MS., Pastor R.H. Walls. He relocated to Killeen, TX. In 1996 to be near his youngest sister and her family and to enjoy his retirement. He united with the Marlboro Heights Missionary Baptist Church in Killeen, TX., Pastor Shaun L. Moton.
James enjoyed a simple, quiet life in his community where he was respectfully referred to as "Old School".
He met many people and made really good friends and he inhabited the love and respect of them all. Most importantly, James loved God and he loved serving God's people. He was always surrounded by people of all ages, races, and genders on his front porch, where people would drop by and sat, even when he wasn't home. He lived a peaceful life and was always ready to provide sound advice and stories of "way back when."
James was very well known by the neighborhood store owners, employees, and his neighbors for riding his scooter through-out the neighborhood, spreading words of cheer and blessings. He was an avid card player and spent hours playing games of spades with his local nieces and nephews. He was the Family Patriarch which he took very seriously in that he would telephone as many of his family members as he could, every morning, just to check on them and to remind them of God's Love for them.
James Smith will be greatly missed. He is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Leroy Evans, John L. Smith, and Kenneth Slaughter. He leaves to cherish his memory: His sisters Evangelist Bobbie N. Camper, Los Angeles, California; Elosie Smith-Young (James), Orlando, Florida; Betty L. Smith, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Charlene Walker, Jackson, Mississippi; Lucile Wray (Clarence) Belton, Texas; a brother, Elbert Slaughter, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; close friends Annie Jackson, Many, Louisiana; Dennis Jackson, Killeen, Texas and a host of cousins,
nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and many friends.
