Memorial service for Ms. Gladys Ruth Bright, 93 of Killeen, TX will be held Saturday, June 20, 2026, 1:00 p.m. at Chisolm's Family Funeral Home in Killeen, TX.

Gladys Ruth Bright was born on March 20, 1933, in Durham, North Carolina, to the late Katie Simmons and Alige Young. She was born and raised in Durham, where she developed the strong values, resilience, and loving spirit that would define her throughout her life.

Gladys attended Whitted Junior High School and later Hillside High School in Durham, North Carolina. Her early years in Durham shaped her deep appreciation for family, community, and lifelong friendships.

Gladys was a dedicated and hardworking woman who took pride in providing for her family. She worked as a Housekeeper at the Plaza Hotel in Killeen, Texas, for 20 years, where she was known for her strong work ethic and commitment. She later worked as a newspaper carrier for the Killeen Daily Herald for 20 years, faithfully delivering newspapers throughout the community. Her diligence, reliability, and perseverance were evident in all that she did.

On May 29, 2026, at the age of 93 years, Gladys peacefully entered eternal rest, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, and service to others.

Gladys was a loving and caring woman whose heart was always open to those in need. She was known for taking people in, offering encouragement, and showing unconditional love to family, friends, and even strangers. Her home was a place of warmth, comfort, and acceptance, and her generous spirit touched countless lives.

A woman of strong faith, Gladys attended Anderson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Killeen, Texas. Her faith sustained her throughout her life and guided the compassion and kindness she extended to others.

Gladys enjoyed many simple pleasures. She loved reading books and challenging herself with crossword puzzles. She rarely missed an episode of her favorite soap opera, "The Young and the Restless," and enjoyed keeping up with the lives of its characters. She was also a devoted football fan. For many years she proudly supported the Dallas Cowboys and later became an enthusiastic fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. She also greatly admired President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, following their accomplishments with pride and admiration.

Above all else, Gladys treasured her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. Her wisdom, strength, and unwavering love created a foundation that will continue to guide and inspire future generations.

Gladys was blessed with seven children during her lifetime. She was preceded in death by two beloved children, Valerie Jean Hoskins and Richard Noel.

She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved children: Ronald Alexander Hoskins, Durham, North Carolina, Charlotte Smith-Spratley, St. Robert, Missouri, Shelton Smith III, San Antonio, Texas, Pamela Smith-Brewer, Richmond, Virginia, and Saundra Walker, Killeen, Texas. She is also survived by eight cherished grandchildren, sixteen beloved great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.

Though our hearts are saddened by her passing, we rejoice in the countless memories she leaves behind and the love she shared so freely. Her legacy of compassion, faith, generosity, and strength will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know and love her.
