Memorial service for Mrs. Deretha D. Carter, 83 of Harker Heights, TX will be held Sunday, November 7, 2021, 4:00 p.m. at Chisolm's Family Funeral Home in Killeen, TX. A private family interment will be held at a later date. Mrs. Carter passed away November 2, 2021 in Harker Heights, TX.

Deretha was born September 9, 1938, in Panther Burn, Mississippi to Leroy and Clairee Dixon. Her father worked at John Deere until his retirement and her mother was an entrepreneur and ran the family grocery business. They lived and raised their family in Leland, Mississippi.
Growing up she was an active member of Pleasant Springs Missionary Baptist Church and accepted Christ as her Lord and Saviour at an early age.

She attended Breich High School and Mississippi Valley State College. She was married to Freddie Carter Sr. and they had 4 wonderful children.  As a young woman, she worked outside the home as a keypunch operator.­

Her interests included her family, making macramé pieces and building and reupholstering furniture. She was an avid reader and enjoyed writing poetry and doing crossword puzzles. She devoted much of her time and energy to her family members.  She enjoyed doing volunteer services including fundraising for Habitat 4 Humanity.

She is survived by her sister MaryAnn Walker, sister Clara Nailor (Eddlie Nailor), brother Charles Dixon (Irene), sister Velma Dorsey and sister Deborah Brown. Her children, daughter Raye P Mayhorn, daughter Carolyn (C.C.) Harris, son Freddie Carter Jr. (Johnnie Mae) and grandchildren Bert Leroy Nunley (Royetta Bueno)  Brandy M. Williams, Raymone Woods, Andre Harris (Erica Estrada), Armond Harris (Mary), Freddie Carter III, Earl Satterwhite (Tanisha) Jamie Satterwhite and great-grandchildren Armani Bueno, Dante Bueno, Ava Nunley, Javon Wood, Deron Carter, Jaylen Williams, Andres Harris, Sasha Harris, Julian Harris, Carter Padilla, Caliegh Bueno, Cane Bueno, JaMary Satterwhite and JaMazing Leverett, ­JaMaya Satterwhite, JaRiah Satterwhite, JaNyla Satterwhite and JaNaya Satterwhite.

She was preceded in death by her parents Leroy and Clairee Dixon, brother Leroy Dixon Jr. (Rita), brother James Sylvester Dixon (Jerry-deceased), sister Martha Bullock (Jose-deceased),  sister Earline Bingham (Robert -deceased), brother George Dixon (Sandra K -deceased), daughter Ava Marie Nunley and her grandson Legscardo E. Palmer.

In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation .
