Funeral service for Chief Petty Officer U.S. Navy (Ret.) Joseph D. New, 94 of Temple, TX will be held Monday, June 2, 2025, 11:00 a.m. at Chisolm's Family Funeral Home in Killeen, TX. Burial with Navy Honors will follow the service at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, TX.

Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service (10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.) at the funeral home. Mr. New passed away May 13, 2025, in Temple, TX. He was born April 9, 1931, in Troy, SC.

Joseph Dolphus New was born to Alberta New on April 9th, 1931, in Troy, South Carolina. His survivors are his sons, Glenn Rodgers, Henderson, Nevada, Ray Rodgers, Las Vegas, Nevada, his grandchildren, Brittany Rodgers, Belton, Texas, Glenn Rodgers Jr., Fresno, California, his sister, Verdelle Hairston, Hyattsville, Maryland, and his brother, Vernon A. Brown, Clinton, Maryland. His brother Nathaniel Brown of Suitland, Maryland, preceded him in death. A host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins will miss him dearly.

A young Joseph with his mother and sister migrated to Washington, D.C., where he enjoyed the comfort of an extended family of uncles, aunts, and cousins. Following high school, he joined the US Navy in 1952, faithfully and diligently serving our country during the Cold War conflicts in Korea and Vietnam. During his assignments with the Pacific Fleet, he made lifelong friends, especially during an assignment on the USS Providence CLG-6. He retired after twenty years of service, attaining the rank of a Chief Petty Officer.

As a civilian, Joseph relocated to Clinton, Maryland, and became a Law Enforcement Officer with the Pentagon Police Department. Joseph renewed family relationships and made many new life-long acquaintances. After twenty years of faithful service, he retired in 1992.

Following retirement, Joseph New moved to Temple, Texas, where he renewed his relationships with family and friends who resided in central Texas and Houston. He made countless lifelong friends at the Temple Veterans Administration physical fitness center. His favorite pastimes were cooking barbecue, baking cheesecakes, entertaining family and friends, and traveling. Joseph had a great sense of humor, loved a good story and joke, and enjoyed life. He passed peacefully while sleeping on May 13th.
