Alfredo was born April 20, 1958, to Consuelo Mares in Piedras Negras, Coahuila Mexico. Alfredo went home to be with Jesus on November 25, 2025. He passed peacefully in his home full of his closest family, surrounding him with love in Killeen, Texas. Alfredo and Juanita married on December 29, 1981, in Eagle Pass, Texas.
Alfredo retired in 2008 after 40 years of back breaking work. He worked from a very young age polishing shoes and sometimes selling garapiñados, a Mexican peanut candy in the streets of Piedras Negras. Once a teenager, he came to the United States and started to work across the states in agricultural fields. He harvested cotton, cucumber, corn, cabbage, broccoli, spinach, and processed cantaloupes and onions. He would say, "the smaller the crop the better the pay". He later worked as a carpenter with federal government contracts. He had to move to Atlanta, Georgia for a couple of years and later moved to "The Great Place" Fort Hood, Texas. In 1992 Killeen, Texas became his home. He loved being part of building and remodeling soldier's barracks, dining facilities, orderly rooms and many more buildings. He had such great work ethic, no matter how tired, or sick he felt, he always showed up to work and gave it his all.
Alfredo enjoyed fishing and loved wood working, building bird houses, tables, chairs and much more. A lover of all animals, he cared for pot-bellied pigs, several small dogs, cats, chickens, ducks and turkeys. He loved all genres of music, from country to soft rock and roll and spanish music and oh, how he loved the famous radio station Delilah.
Alfredo is preceded in death by: his mother, Consuelo Mares; and brother, Pablo Mares.
He is survived by; his wife, Juanita; children, Alfredo Mares Jr., Claudia (Michael) Cooke, Ricardo Mares, and Jessica (Juan Carlos) Mares; grandchildren, Isaiah, Saúl, Sarahí, Isabella, and Samúel; sister, Maria Salazar; brother, Arturo (Jayne) Mares; brothers-in-law, Raymundo Covarrubias, Margarito Covarrubias; sister-in-law, Maria de Consuelo Covarrubias; and a host of nieces and nephews.
